Which direction to face when praying?

When praying in Islam, you’re turning your face to the holiest of places, the Mecca. In Islam, the direction you take when praying is called Qiblah. During the old times, the compass with the direction of Qiblah was sewn into the prayer rug, but the modern-day Muslims use the smartphone apps to determine the direction of the Qiblah. While you can also buy a special compass to carry around, the smartphone will do just fine.

The direction is all about facing the Kaaba, the center of Mecca, and according to the Muslim belief, the center of the world as well. The fact is that if you’re on a different side of the globe, the Kaaba will be in a different direction, but it usually is facing east.
